Using the toolbar
In the toolbar you will see the icon 
which if you hover over it is called “Insert Signature”. If you click on that, it will insert, at your cursor position, the code:

It would be messy if you did this for all edits, and in any case you can see who made which edit on the “Old revisions” button. Equally, if there is a reasonable consensus between curators, there is no point to claiming individual authorship.
The one vital exception to this is in the “Commentary” section. See the template for topic pages.
