====== Editing, saving and reverting ======

Before getting into the details of editing a page, it's worth being clear about the process.

On the right of each page, in normal view, there is a small menu of icons (shown on the left here for reassurance!).
If you are allowed to edit the page, there is a pencil-like icon at the top {{pencil-icon.png|(This is just an illustration, don't click this!)}}.

When you rest a pointer on the pencil icon up there, top right,\\
"Edit this page [e]" pops up (for me, at least, in English).\\
This is where you click / press to edit the page as a whole.

When you click there, you get the editing view of the page, and you will see buttons at the bottom
for "Save", "Preview" and "Cancel".

If you don't actually want to edit the page, or if you decide that what you are about to change is not quite right, you click on the "Cancel" button and you get back to the main view of the page with nothing changed.

If you want to check how your edit will appear, without committing to it, click on "Preview":
the instructions make it clear what you should do now. It just adds a preview below, so you can check: the options remain as they were for editing.

If and when you are happy with your edit, you click on "Save", and what you see goes back to the normal view, with your changes in place.

===== Editing just one section of a longer page =====

If the page you are on has several headings on it, you will see two or more buttons like this {{!section-edit-button.png|This is an illustration: don't click this!}} to the right and **below** each section that can be edited.((For Wikipedia editors this may be confusing, because in MediaWiki the similar button is //above// the section it refers to.))
Hovering over that button will pop up the title of the section, as well as showing faint grey borders to the left and right of the whole section that will be selected.
If you find it easier, you can use this to edit just the section, including the heading for that section, without risking disturbing the rest of the page.
The main edit button will still always work for the whole page.

===== Correcting or reverting mistakes =====

Unfortunately, the edit window doesn't have an 'undo' function. For that reason, the best way of editing is to save 
frequently, and if you have made a mistake you can cancel your edit and you will only lose the changes you have made since the last 'Save'. However, Control-Z works to undo last edits on some systems, like mine.

Reverting means going back to a previous version. DokuWiki stores the previous versions of the page, and you can see all of these by clicking on the 'Old revisions' icon,{{old-revisions-icon.png|This is an illustration: don't click here!}} just below the edit pencil. Click on one of these, and you will see what the page looked like at some time in the past. If you are sure (as it says on the old revisions page) you want to revert to an old revision, select it from below, click {{pencil-icon.png|This is an illustration: don't click here!}} and save it.
