Fear not: this can look very unfamiliar at first sight, but it's not really hard.

A namespace in DokuWiki is basically a way of pointing to different parts of the wiki. It's just like the folder (or directory) structure on your file system (on your hard drive or wherever), which allows you to arrange your files into a tree-like structure of sensible groups. Many web sites arrange their pages into folders or directories. This is a very usefu…

This is not for all edits. In any case you can see who made which edit on the “Old revisions” button, and you can see who last edited the page at the bottom right: that is put there automatically. Equally, if there is a reasonable consensus between curators, there is no point to claiming individual authorship.

Documentation for curating this wiki for Growing the Commons

There is a playground where you can try all of the skills below. Try it!

Who are our curators and contributors?

To manage a knowledge resource such as this, we need a variety of knowledge, skills and experience, which may not come all together in the same person. We need:

Procedure for starting a new topic

This starts when we have at least one confirmed curator, preferably two or more.

The “wiki team” is currently Katja and Simon, and we consult overall with Dave and others.

	* Be clear about the topic you want to start, and that it isn’t dealt with adequately within existing topics.

Templates and page structure

You can try out some of these on the playground page.

Templates are set up for particular namespaces. If a template has been set up, it will appear as a kind of scaffolding when you create a new page on the wiki — in this case, suggesting the elements that we think work well in the particular kind of page you are creating. It helps both writers and readers:

Uploading images

Being able to upload photos and other images is important for all curators for their own personal home pages (see getting an account), and then for improving any other pages you create or curate. In Growing the Commons, we pride ourselves in making pages look attractive with the addition of images — a practice we have taken on from

Watch pages

DokuWiki, like other wikis, including Wikipedia, allows you to be notified when anyone makes changes to pages that you want to know about.
Anyone can do this, if they have an interest in changes to a page, provided they are logged in and have registered their e-mail address — otherwise DokuWiki wouldn't know where to send the notifications

WRAP

Try out all these techniques below in the playground.

What WRAP does is essentially sneaking in some HTML functionality (and as you might also see, following HTML syntax) for a few things that aren't easy in a lightweight markup language (LML). This kind of thing is a common feature of wikis and related systems.
